Newsletter October 2017

Hello Readers & Fellow Writers!

My goodness! September was a hot mess betweenHurricane Irma flipping Central Florida upside down and then Indie Bookfest 2017 swept me off my feet. Now we’ve already ventured into October and I can’t help but feel I am falling forward with the speed of things unfolding. This month is filled with workshops that are all designed for prepping writers, new and old, for National Novel Writing Month aka November. What this means is Valerie is a very busy Author since I am also an instructor and mentor for many writers!

Post Indie Bookfest 2017

WOW! I had a great time! This was my first time being a featured Author at a 4-day convention setup and I can’t wait to do it again in 2018. If you are here in Florida, I cannot express how much I appreciated the amount of fun, the amazing people I met (Readers, Authors, Bloggers, and Industry folks), and the memories I made at this event. The cost is more than reasonable! And I want to plan on staying at the hotel so I can really unwind next year. Indie Bookfest 2018 will be in August, so keep an eye out over on their website and/or Facebook group as we surge forward into the new year. Also, posted about my fun and shared some pictures over on my blog!

Writing Tip For Fall Time

Keep writing, keep building, keep developing. It’s that last one that seems to be the harder element to grasp. We can build and lay words upon the page, but what exactly does it mean to “develop” or what is it we are “developing” and for what reasons? If you’ve been to one of my classes you may actually know the answer, for the emotions of readers, but for those of you who don’t have the luxury of living nearby, I want to expand your scope of thinking. Part of the mindset comes from my background involving Game Development, but it’s very important in any industry where storytelling is the primary connection between the creator and audience.

Development can be broken into three parts: the characters, the world, and the plot. The fun part of the writing field is having no right or wrong answer. Take what works for you and add it into your toolbox. Developing a plot mean looking for holes, recognizing glossed over areas, and even catching moments where you were telling more than showing. As for your world, you’ll be developing the background noise, making the environment and cultures resonate louder and add more spice to the flavor of your story. Lastly, my favorite one, characters! Well-developed characters are tangible and connect with readers with ease while reacting and shifting with interactions to their world and plot.

When all three sections are developed, they should be able to interlock with one another in such a way, that when you tug on one part, it moves the other two. Granted, that doesn’t mean you failed to develop all three areas. One part can be broken and not moving the other two. For example, a broken character will have zero pull on the world and plot, yet these things still tug on the character. There are numerous ways broken bits can still be functional and just need the slightest of tweaks to fix.

SO! Check out my Blog posts on how I develop and make checklists to keep things interlocked. There may be a new way of breaking it down or even something I see you never thought about before. Sharing information and techniques is one of the best ways to help us all build up weaker areas and still stay true to our unique writing voices or storytelling. Dig around in these three and see what tools you can add to the box you are building:
